Papers, 1794-1834.

Papers, 1794-1834. They consist of five volumes of diaries, 1816-1831; a register of marriages performed by Stanford, 1794-1830; four volumes of sermons, notes, narratives, etc., including one devoted to material about the State Prison and one to material about the City Hospital; and a receipt book recording payments from his estate, kept in 1834 by his son, Thomas N. Stanford, who acted as executor. The diaries contain short entries descibing his work preaching and visiting the sick in the State Prison, City Hospital, Bellevue, and other institutions, as well as his work with condemned prisoners and at executions. The volumes of notes contain sermons, narratives of holy deaths, and proposals for reforms, such as establishing a separate prison for juvenile offenders. Some passages in the diaries and volumes of notes were marked up to be printed.
