Whiskey triumphant over Turner : a funeral sermon delivered to Col. Angell's regiment at Valley Forge in May 1778, ca. 1778.

Holograph manuscript, ca. 1778, of a sermon Tenney preached at the funeral of a soldier named Turner, who had died of alcohol poisoning, and warning against the dangers of whiskey. A prefatory note explains that there had been an outbreak of whiskey poisoning in the army in the spring of 1778, when the troops received their arrears of pay.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander.
