Account books, 1778-1779.

Account book of the managers, January 1778 - January 1779, and receipt book, January - May 1779. The account book frequently mentions James Rivington, Mr. Gaine, Mills & Hicks, and Thomas Barrow, the treasurer of the theatre. It occupies the first 18 pages of a volume which is otherwise taken up with the accounts of a trader in Nova Scotia, 1786-1788. The trader records bringing livestock from New York, and was apparently located near Bear River and Annapolis Royal. He dealt in general merchandise and furs, and records many payments in kind and in labor. The receipt book, kept by Thomas Barrow, includes receipts for money paid to the performers (Maria Turner, Anna and Jane Tomlinson, Margaret Shaw, the chief musician Philipp Pfeil, who later anglicized his name to Philip Phile, and others), as well as for costumes, candles, jewelry, sherry, and other theatre expenses. It gives the titles of some of the plays performed.
