Orderly book, 1777.

Orderly book, dated September 11, 1777 - December 23, 1777, when the regiment was serving in the Northern Army under the command of General Horatio Gates. Contains general and regimental orders, dated from Stillwater, Saratoga and Albany, as well as weekly returns and a return of ordnance and stores. The orders include material on courts-martial, shortages of clothing and supplies, and a list of prisoners taken by the enemy. Accompanied by a partial photostat.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander.
