Diary, 1862 Dec.-1864 May, kept by naval engineering officer Oscar C. Lewis while on board the U.S. gun boat Port Royal operating in the waters off Apalachicola, Florida; Cuba; Mobile, Alabama; New Orleans; and Pensacola during the civil war. Later entries, Jan.-May 1864, cover months Lewis spent in New York City while attached to the U.S.S. Ascutney. Entries record Lewis's daily shipoard routine, manning posts in steerage and the engine room, reading, writing, taking meals, etc. Additionally includes accounts of encounters with other vessels, brief excursions on shore, fellow crew members, accidents and activities on shipboard, refugees taken on board, and news of the war, including reports of naval engagements and victories. While in New York, Lewis describes his daily activities dining and visiting with friends and colleagues, checking in at the naval yard, shopping, and attending to personal business.
