Receipt books, 1859-1881, of the Lawrence family firm of Emlen Lawrence & Co. of New York City, recording payments for freight, brokerage, pharmaceuticals (including opium), spices, bird seed, oils, cooperage, storage, and unspecified bills. Entries in the early volume, 1859-1865, are begun by George N. Lawrence, with later entries by Alfred N. Lawrence and Emlen Lawrence & Co.. Later volumes, 1865-1881, contain entries by Emlen N. and John B. Lawrence, who evidently assumed control of the business as partners in 1865.
