Autobiography of Stephen Jarvis : Typescript, [19--].

Typescript, probably created in the early twentieth century, of the autobiography of Connecticut Loyalist Stephen Jarvis, spanning the years 1775-1830 (bulk 1775-1785). Jarvis writes of his home in Danbury, Connecticut, his experiences attempting to join the British forces, the Battle of Brandywine, activities in the cavalry of the Queen's Ranger, wintering at Oyster Bay and Staten Island, The retreat from Monmouth, the reported death of Col. John Graves Simcoe, operations in South Carolina and Florida, hostile reception on his return to Danbury after the war, his emigration to New Brunswick Province, and, from there, to Upper Canada, with comments about numerous British officers, and about life in the Queen's Rangers. Original manuscript written about 1830. Whereabouts of the original unknown.

John Graves Simcoe was born at Cotterstock, England in 1752, the third of four sons of John and Katherine Simcoe. He spent one year at Merton College, Oxford, before entering the army as an Ensign in the 35th Foot in 1770. He was posted to Boston in 1775, and in 1777 was given command of the Queen's Rangers, a mixed (predominantly light infantry) corps made up of loyalists. He took part in several operations in New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia before being invalided home as a Lieutenant-Colon...
