Papers and photographs, 1959-1965.

Papers and photographs relating to the military service and death in action of Donald D. Watson, a lieutenant in the Air Force during the Vietnam War and the first Air Force Academy graduate from Wisconsin to be killed in that conflict. The collection includes the letters and telegrams written to Watson's parents to inform them of his death while flying a combat mission. Certificates for posthumous awards and for successful training can also be found. Orders, pilot flight records, and training papers give a good picture of Watson's military service. The oversized folder contains certificates and commendations earned by Watson. The photographs include several shots of Watson alone and in groups, along with one unidentified photograph that likely depicts then-Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson presenting a diploma to Watson at the conclusion of his training.
