Jurist and U.S. Senator from Ohio. Correspondence, autobiography (1773-1823), journal (1839-44) kept while a Senator, and other papers. The bulk of the collection consists of Tappan's correspondence with his son, Eli Todd Tappan, newspaper editor and educator; his brother, Lewis Tappan, New York abolitionist; and his law partner, Edwin M. Stanton. The material pertains to the Ohio Democratic Party, the abolition issue, the Oregon question, Tappan's work as a member of the Ohio Canal Commission (1823-34), Texas annexation, and other matters.
