Panel for National Dialogue on Museum Native American Relations records, 1970-1990.

The Barry M. Goldwater Center for Cross Cultural Communication at the Heard Museum organized and sponsored the Dialogue Panel to allow a year of discussion on Native American materials, their identification, use, care, and ownership. The findings were reported to the Second Session of the 101st Congress, 1990. The Heard Museum has been active in the issue of repatriation since the 1970s. Museum personnel continued to be involved in the development of national legislation after the panel published its final report. The records of the panel were supplemented with records from the Office of the Director of the Heard Museum: Martin E. Sullivan. Panel records include participant lists, meeting handouts and agendas, legislation, meeting minutes, written statements by panel members, correspondence, newsclippings, and cassettes of the proceedings. The final report was published February 28, 1990. Supplemental materials from the Office of the Director include records of the Heard Museum's activities, including repatriation efforts, information on items which have been repatriated, and policy statements; Zuni issues; Arizona legislation; testimony before the Congress on H.R. 5237, S. 1980, and related bills; correspondence with the American Association of Museums and policy statements of the Association; Smithsonian Institution policies and legislation; articles and newsclippings.
