The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence, 1815-1880, of Andrew Talcott (while a cadet at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y., and while serving in the U.S. Army Engineer Corps, in Glastonbury, Conn., Washington, D.C., Albany and New York, N.Y., Philadelphia, Pa., and Fort Monroe, Norfolk, and Richmond, Va.). Some correspondents include his mother-in-law Harriet (Randolph) Hackley, father-in-law Richard Shippey Hackley, brother-in-law William Beverly Randolph Hackley, sister Abigail (Talcott) Hale, brother George Talcott, wife Harriet Randolph (Hackley) Talcott, and brother Jared G. Talcott. Also included are his diaries, 1818-1865, concerning daily activities while serving in the U.S. Army Engineer Corps and working on the Imperial Mexican Railway; and his will, October 27. Other materials include a commission, 1757, issued to Andrew's grandfather Elizur Talcott as captain of the 6th cavalry regiment of the Connecticut militia; letters, 1812-1859, written by Harriet (Randolph) Hackley to her son William Beverly Randolph Hackley, grandson Charles Gratiot Talcott, daughter Harriet Randolph (Hackley) Talcott, and granddaughter Mary Gray Talcott; correspondence, 1832-1860, of Harriet Randolph (Hackley) Talcott with her sister-in-law Abigail (Talcott) Hale and sons Charles Gratiot Talcott and Thomas Mann Randolph Talcott; and correspondence, 1855-1918, of Thomas Mann Randolph Talcott concerning family life, the Civil War, Robert E. Lee, and the Randolph and Talcott families, a memorandum, 1875, of an [1870] interview with Robert E. Lee, and Thomas's will, 1919.
