This small collection consists of letters written to Peyton Randolph (1783-1853) by his cousin John Randolph of Roanoke (1773-1833) regarding family news; letters written to Peyton's father-in-law, James Innes (1754-1798), by his brother Harry Innes ([1752-1816] concerning, in part, the Treaty of San Lorenzo, 1795, establishing free navigation of the Mississippi River), and Thomas Jefferson [copy] and George Washington [copy] concerning Innes's service in the Virginia Militia during the Revolutionary War and his involvement in recruiting for the U.S. Continental Army; letters concerning James Innes; and miscellany.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander. Harry Innes was involved, at the time this letter was written, in what is now termed the Spanish Conspiracy. The conspiracy involved Kentucky petitioning to become an independent state and then entering into an alliance with Spain. This would be benificial to Kentucky economically while protecting Spain's valuable colony, Mexico. This alliance plan failed after the defeat of the Jay-Gardoqui Treaty.
