The University of California, Davis campus, originally known as the University Farm, was established by an act of the State Legislature in 1905. William Harry Lange was born in San Francisco on September 12, 1912. He received a B.S. (1933), M.S. (1934), and PhD in Entomology (1941) from the University of California, Berkeley. From 1936-1944, Lange worked for the California Agricultural Experiment Station at Half Moon Bay, Salinas, and Berkeley/Davis.
