Dancer, choreographer, and actor. Robert Helpmann was born in South Australia in 1909, and died at the age of 77 in 1986. He danced with Anna Pavlova during her Australian tour in 1926 before joining J.C. Williamson's company. He was premier danseur with Sadler's Wells 1933-1950. He produced several ballets, choreographed the ballet "Red Shoes", and created "The Display" for the Australian Ballet. He was artistic director of the Australian Ballet from 1965 to 1976. Michael Benthall made his professional debut in 1938 as an actor, initially playing small parts. His career as a director began in the 1940s. He was director of the Old Vic for nine years from 1953, during which time he embarked on a 'Five Year Plan', staging all 36 plays in the first folio of Shakespeare.
