Papers of K. Edward Lay consist of documentation of houses and buildings, including barns, churches, railroad depots, mills, schools, shops and stores, taverns, inns and hotels, and other commercial buildings in Charlottesville and Albemarle County, Virginia, many of which are included in his book "The architecture of Jefferson country." The collection contains photographs, slides, measured drawings, maps, copies of historical documents and correspondence. The collection also contains historical information on Jefferson's master builders at the University of Virginia, the history of the University of Virginia School of Architecture, and on contemporary architects who worked in Charlottesville and Albemarle County, Virginia. In addition there is material from various design studios taught by Lay at the University of Virginia. Also of interest is a bound volume of photocopies of research materials, sketches, genealogical information, and correspondence of Thomas Martin Thacker, including a reconstruction based on textual evidence of Peter Jefferson's Shadwell Mills.
