Correspondence, notes, copies of speeches. Correspondence includes 29 letters by Altgeld (16 are typescripts) and 46 letters to Altgeld including letters from Henry Demarest, Robert Ingersoll, William Jennings Bryan, Samuel Gompers, and Montague White. Subjects discussed include vote fraud, embezzlement at a state institution, Anti-trust Convention, monopolies, oratory, unemployment, gold standard and the South African Republic. Letters, 113, Browne received from Altgeld's friends and associates including Edmund J. James, David R. Levy, George Schilling, Jane Addams, Edward F. Dunne, Edward Osgood Brown, Louis F. Post, John S. Huey, Joseph Fifer, Barton Corneau, and William Jennings Bryan. Thirty-nine folders of research material consist mainly of notes and drafts which are arranged by chapter. Copies of published articles and Altgeld's speeches.
