There are forty-two letters in this collection. These include thirty-six from Chesley D. Bailey to his wife Ada, one from Bailey to his father, one from Thomas Heath to Bailey, and two letters in German from Phillip Nonweiler to an unknown recipient. The letters from Bailey to his wife describe camp life, and his impressions of the Union army leaders. He writes about skirmishes at Battle Creek, Tullahoma, and Chattanooga, Tennessee. There is a letter from Bailey to the National Park Commission asking that the 9th Infantry be allowed to place a monument at the Chickamauga battlesite. There are also five pages of recollections of the Battle of Shiloh by an unknown author.

Chesley Davis Bailey enlisted in the Union army at Columbia, Kentucky, on 12 December 1861. He and his wife Ada were living in Jeffersonville, Indiana, at the time. He was commissioned into the army as a first lieutenant, and eventually rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was wounded and went home for two months. He recovered and returned to duty but was mustered out of the army at Louisville, Kentucky, 15 December 1864. His birth and death dates are unknown. From the descript...
