Account book and journal spanning years, 1845-1855, 1874, 1878-1879, 1885, and 1917, used by two or more generations of men named Thomas M. Vise. Pre-Civil War entries document the elder Vise's work as a surveyor and plat maker as well as clerking in general stores, specifically the firms of Smith & Ferguson, and later for Abiel Foster and then J.C. Woods; Vise's account book records sales of tobacco, leather goods, agricultural products, and books. Includes "Sale Bill of the estate of Thomas M. Vise Dec[ease]d 19 Oct. 1854." Journal entries titled "Miscellaneous" provide details of Vise's life during antebellum period and summarize events year by year, 1845-1852, with references to the cost of agricultural commodities, Congressional election of 1848, barbecues in celebration of the close of the Mexican War, and meteorological conditions, including the flood of 1851. Post-Civil War accounts in a different hand include a 20 Jan. 1874 notation signed by T.M. Vise concerning his agreement to work as a sharecropper for his step-father [John Spencer Todd (1804-1888)].
