The journals describe Missouri, transportation, settlers, early settlement in Kansas Territory, early Leavenworth, the slavery conflict in Kansas, border & Indian wars, Kansas & Republican Party politics, Kansas statehood, the Civil War & guerrilla activities, the Pony Express, railroad building, and race relations during Reconstruction. In addition there are records of the Leavenworth and Topeka (Kan.) associations.

Henry Miles Moore was born in Brockport, New York September 2, 1826. He was educated in New York and admitted to the bar there in 1848. He practiced law in Louisiana. In 1850 he moved to Weston, Missouri. As a slave owner his sympathies were with the South. In 1854, Moore was involved in organizing the Leavenworth Town Company. He moved to Kansas in 1855 and switched to the Free State cause due to the outrages perpetrated upon Free State forces by Pro Slavery forces. Moore was elected a delegate...
