Papers of John Carr Rogers, 1910-1978, 1993.

The papers contain approximately 1300 photographs of Alexandria, Virginia, and the central Virginia region taken by Rogers. With these are correspondence, legal papers, and artwork including watercolors, pen & ink drawings, pastels, cartoons, illustrations, prints, lead and lineoleum cuts, wodcuts, and a sketchbook. Many of the items relating to Rogers' work at the Washington "Daily News," paraticularly for the travel section. Of interest is correspondence concerning his suspension from work as a government artist for "subversive activity" including letters from Harry F. Byrd, Guy M. Gillette, and George Humphrey.

Guy Mark Gillette was born in Cherokee, Iowa, February 3, 1879. After attending public schools, Gillette served as a sergeant in the Fifty-second Iowa Regiment of the US Army during the Spanish-American War, from May 25 until October 30, 1898.
