Founded by members of Baltimore, New York and Philadelphia Yearly Meetings of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), Swarthmore College was incorporated in 1864 under a charter from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Delphic Literary Society was a Swarthmore College men's literary society established in 1874. From 1890 to 1902, the group compiled a monthly manuscript journal. It also maintained a library and presented a mock senate. In 1913, the group merged with the Eunomian Society, another literary society on campus, to became the Athenaeum.
