The collection consists of a typescript copy of Aveling's article introducing Thomas Hardy's novel, Tess of the D'Urbevilles, to a German audience. The essay was originally written in German for the periodical Neue Zeit, but has been translated into English. This is presumed to have been Hardy's copy, and includes some corrections [in Hardy's hand?]. The essay outlines the plot and themes of the novel, and comments on Hardy's writing and the novel's meaning.

Edward Aveling was an English author, translator, and activist. He contributed articles on scientific themes to journals, and was influenced by the theories of Charles Darwin, eventually writing several books about him. An active Socialist, he helped translate Das Kapital into English and toured America with Eleanor Marx, but conflicts between Aveling and Britain's Socialist Party limited his influence.
