Reminiscence, incomplete, about experience in Belle Isle, the food, treatment by the guards and the difference in the treatment after the regular guards who were from wealthy Richmond families were sent to the front and the guards were sent from whatever troop was garrisoning the city forts. Discusses his experience in the hospital and the help from the "Sisters of Charity."

From Okaw, Illinois served with the 115th Illinois Infantry, Company G until he was taken prisoner by the Confederates and sent to Belle Isle, Virginia where he developed scurvy and was placed in the hospital.
