Jesuit missionary work in the Colville Valley commenced in 1848, when firebrand Fr. Louis Vercruysse, S.J., was directed to minister to the local Indian and Cree population near present Chewelah, Wash. Vercruysse withdrew after only a year, because most of his congregation had drifted away to the California gold fields.
