Letters of Albert Bushnell, 1844, 1851.

In a letters to his uncle, 1844 March 5 and 12, Bushnell describes sailing from Boston to Cape Palmas; Africa, the life and death of the Rev. William G. Crocker, a missionary to Edina; Monrovia, Liberia; fever; and a delay in passage to Gaboon Mission. In a letter to his cousins from his missions station on Konig Island on the Gaboon River, 1851 May 18, he discusses the rainy season; thoughts of home; his life as a missionary; his health and his religious beliefs. Of interest is a very brief description of tribal warfare, both canoe fights and midnight massacres of villages, and his comment "O when will these poor remnants of tribes left by the slave trade cease to destroy each other : not I suppose until their tiger-like natures are changed by the Holy Spirit."
