Menden trade card collection, ca. 1850-ca. 1910.

Printed trade cards, advertisements, calling cards, greeting cards and other decorative ephemera. The trade card collection represents an enormous range of advertising and decorative printed ephemera produced in the United States during the last half of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th. There are cards for the manufacturers and retailers of soap, sewing machines, thread, dress patterns, laundry soap and household cleansers and musical instruments. One also finds cards based on Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, Mother Good and nursery rhymes. Chromolithography was the primary means for reproduction, particularly of the graphic imagery, although many cards are reproduced via monochrome lithography and bear text supplied by letterpress printing. Many prominent lithographers of the late 19th century are represented, including J.H. Bufford, Donaldson Brothers, Gies & Co., Ketterlinus, L. Prang and Raphael Tuck. Also printed works and ephemera related to Lewis Carroll and his Alice in Wonderland, Kate Greenaway, and an album of 19th century bookmarks and printed ribbons of a political, business and sentimental nature.
