This collection contains photographs taken by Carol Sullivan, an anthropologist, who did extensive research on the American Indian Movement (AIM), especially the 1973 occupation of Wounded Knee, at Pine Ridge, South Dakota. The collection contains photos of the occupation, fighting between federal agents and Indians, Onondaga Indians leaving Wounded Knee, and a federal informant. Russell Means, Leonard Crow Dog, Dennis Banks, Billy Lazore, Tom Bad Cob, and Wallace Black Elk are among the prominent American Indian Movement figures represented in this collection. The Wounded Knee Trading Post and church are also depicted.

Carol Sullivan (b. 1935), anthropologist and human rights activist, was a member of the anthropology faculty at Syracuse University, New York, when she went to the Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota, to witness the takeover of Wounded Knee by members of the American Indian Movement (AIM) in 1973.
