John Shaw Welch was born in Paradise, Utah, on July 28, 1888, to John Jr. and Ann Rebecca Shaw Welch. He graduated with a B.S. in Soil Chemistry from the Utah Agricultural College (Logan, Utah) in 1911. From 1911-1917, he served as Superintendent at the University of Idaho Agricultural Experiment Station in Gooding, Idaho. Welch married Eulalia Sorensen on June 18, 1913. In 1917, J. S. John Shaw Welch was born in Paradise, Utah on July 28, 1888. He attended college at the Brigham Young College in Logan, Utah. After graduation he married Eulalia Sorenson and took a job as superintendent of the University of Idaho Experiment Station in Gooding, Idaho. In 1917, he was called to become principal of the Maori Agricultural College in New Zealand, a position he held for three years.
