Britannia (Ship) logbook, 1792-1795.

The logbook of the ship Britannia details a shipping and sealing voyage from England to Sydney, Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Jakarta, the Philippines, and South Africa, Feb. 1792-June 1795. The logbook is incomplete; it continues aboard the vessels Endeavor and Providence. The master was William Raven; the logbook keeper was R. (Robert?) Murray. The logbook includes notes on animals, earthquakes, icebergs, and pirates seen or experienced during the voyage; inventories of the ship's cargo; incidents of death, naval desertion, stealing, and diseases among the merchant mariners on board; illustrations, including harbors and ships; descriptions of nautical instruments, shipbuilding operations, shipboard occupations, and indigenous peoples encountered; examples of navigation, poetry, and sea songs; and an encounter with a privateering vessel. Descriptions of ports in New Caledonia, New Zealand, the Philippines, and South Africa are included. During its voyage, the Britannia spoke the ship Favorite, out of Nantucket, and the vessels (of unknown rigging) Hunter, out of New York, and Sally, out of Philadelphia.
