Letters to Overton's wife Mary Elizabeth Sharp Overton discuss his experiences at Officer Candidate School, Miami Beach, Florida, and as an officer at the Langley Air Field, Virginia. A few letters to his mother-in-law Mrs. Vernon H. Sharp, are interspersed. Overton describes his training in Florida and duties in Virginia in detail. The collection also contains an apparantly unrelated letter, 1936, to Mrs. Campbell Bligh from [Campbell Bligh] enclosing a photograph.

At Harris Neck, Georgia, in the remote northern reaches of McIntosh County, the United States government, in the fall of 1942, confiscated the lands along the South Newport and Barbour Island Rivers. Paved runways were constructed for aircraft, and Harris Neck became an air reconnaissance base for the United States Army Air Force during World War II.
