The collection consists of eleven boxes that contain papers related to Stephen Spongberg's botanical explorations, his published material, and his active role in Arnold Arboretum administration. Included are pre-publication materials from "A Reunion of Trees," extensive notes and correspondence related to his participation in expeditions to Japan, Korea, and the Sino-American Botanical Expedition to China, and administrative papers relating to his role as editor of the Journal of the Arnold Arboretum. His extensive correspondence with other professionals in the field of botanical and horticultural taxonomy are also included.

Stephen Alan Spongberg was born October 15, 1942 in Rockford, Illinois. He received a Ph. D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, in 1971. Dr. Spongberg began working at the Arnold Arboretum in 1970 in the position of assistant curator, working on the Generic Flora of the Southeastern United States project as a postdoctoral graduate.
