Vignettes on his experiences during the Civil War, his service as U.S. consul in Japan and England, and friends Bret Harte and David Gray. Includes a chronology of his life and several photographs of himself at various ages. Also, a copy of Sylvia Chatfield Bates' "An Elmira College boy", from her Elmira College Stories, concerning Shepard as the only male student at the women's college, 1859-1861.

David Gray (1870-1968) was born in Buffalo, New York. He graduated from Harvard University in 1892, and received a Doctor of Letters from Bowdoin College in 1925. He married Maude Livingston Hall Waterbury, an aunt to Eleanor Roosevelt, in 1914. Between 1893 and 1899, he worked as a reporter and editorial writer for several Rochester and Buffalo newspapers. Born at Arcade, N.Y. Enlisted in the 82nd Infantry Regiment, N.Y.S.V. on 9 May 1861; wounded in action 8 June 1862. Mustered out as first lieutenant.
