Lewis Condict papers, 1833-1837.

Consists of a bound volume of notes on Revolutionary War pension applications taken by Lewis Condict between the years 1833-1837. In these notes, Condict attemps to outline and verify the war service of 122 applicants using each man's own statements and/or the testimony of fellow soldiers. His findings are passed along to the pension office where they approved or declined the application. The case notes are in no particular order and are not indexed, however, the finding aid lists the names of applicants in both alphabetical order and the order they appear.

Lewis Condict (1772-1862), a physician from Morristown, N.J. (Morris County), received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1794. Dr. Condict was a U.S. congressman (1811-1817, 1819-1833), the first president of the Morris and Essex Railroad (1835), and a trustee of the College of New Jersey (1827-1861). In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander.
