William Addison Phillips papers, 1857-1937.

This collection contains a variety of items. There is correspondence, poetry, a biographical sketch, and the Spilman family genealogical papers (1868 to 1893); including fifteen letters dated from 1868 to 1893 and eighteen miscellaneous items such as two genealogical charts, copies of family records, biographical notes, et cetera. The correspondence includes letters from Lawrence Phillips, Horace Greeley, John Tallman, and others. There are also circulars, excerpts from the Congressional Record, newspaper clippings, and a description of three letters by William Phillips. Lastly, there are three poems by William Phillips and a four page biographical sketch of him.

William Addison Phillips was born in Scotland on January 14, 1824. He was well educated before the age of 15. He came to a farm in Randolph County, Illinois with his parents. At the age of majority he became associated with B.J.F. Hannah, editor of the Chester Herald. From 1852 to 1855 William was a newspaperman who also studied law and was admitted to the bar.
