Manthey-Zorn papers, 1906-1959.

The papers contain Manthey-Zorn's letters dealing with his appointment on the faculty of Amherst College and the notes for and the draft of an uncompleted memoir of his life and teaching on the German faculty of the College. Of particular importance are his observations on the Meiklejohn presidency at Amherst College.

Meiklejohn, Alexander, 1872-1964

Alexander Meiklejohn was born in England in 1872, and brought to the United States in 1880 at the age of eight. He was educated in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, and graduated from Brown University in 1893. He took his M.A. at Brown and in 1897, received his doctorate in philosophy from Cornell University. He taught philosophy and metaphysics at Brown and was dean from 1901 to 1912. He became president of Amherst College in 1912 and served until 1924. Manthey-Zorn was born in Sheboygan, Wis. He graduated from Adelbert College of Western Reserve University in 1901 and received his Ph. D. in 1904 from the University of Leipzig.
