Chase was born in Syracuse, NY in 1874. After graduating from Amherst College (1896) Chase went to MIT for a B.S. in Mechnical Engineering, 1900. He served as superintendent of the Syracuse Chilled Plow Company, 1900-1904 and designing engineer for the H.H. Franklin Automobile Company, 1904-1906. He later organized the Chase Motor Truck Company and served in World War I in the Army Ordnance Department. He was an accomplished violinist.
