Negative taken for March 18, 1965, Arkansas Gazette article "Marker Near Calion Honors De Soto's Daring Band," B1:2. A marker denoting the path of Hernando de Soto through Arkansas. Hernando de Soto spent a winter in 1542 in what is now the Champagnolle Hill area. Champagnolle Hill is located near Calion, Union County, Arkansas. The Masonic Hall - Champagnolle Lodge is pictured behind the marker. Marker reads, "Colonial Dames XVII Century. Hernando de Soto Wintered on this ridge November 1541 - March 6, 1542. The Spanish Explorer with his Conquistadores used the slough, now part of the lake, to enter the Ouachita River to visit the Indians along the banks. Here Juan Ortiz, the interpreter died; the first Christian religious service was celebrated; and Juan Guzman was left behind with his Indian sweetheart. Erected February 25, 1965 by Arkansas Society Colonial Dames of the 17th Century."
