Mary discusses Mr Hackett and his background. She wants the Markhams to be nice to him since he is the new manager of he Juvenile Dept. of Baker and Taylor. Mary has been busy with engagements with other firms. she is careful that know one knows she is dealing with other firms. She discusses a biography and the plans she has for it. She would like those"Eloquent Words" od Mr M. She wants to know who Charles Ferguson is. Mrs. Isodrich is very ill. Kate is there and Mrs. M isn't doing well. The Ryan's are gone. She wants to know if Van Noppens's apartment is empty.

Edmond Byrne Hackett was born in Kilkenny, Ireland on June 8, 1879 and came to the United States in 1895. He was employed as a salesman by Doubleday Page & Company in New York from 1901-1907, and as manager of publishing by Baker & Taylor Company from 1907-1909. Hackett served as director of the Yale University Press soon after its founding in 1908. He was also the founder of the Brick Row Book Shop in New York. Hackett died on November 10, 1953.
