John W. Hevener was a native of Dunmore in Pocahontas County, West Virginia. He was a high school teacher and principal in Ohio, and eventually taught at the college level in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Ohio. Hevener is best known for the book, Which Side Are You On?: Harlan County, Kentucky Coal Miners, 1931-1939.
