Photographs of Hilda Chase Foster (HCF) and the Foster family, taken between 1879-1981. The bulk of this collection consists of photographs taken by Hilda Chase Foster (HCF) during her travels in Europe, Asia, India, Ireland, and the western United States between 1908 and 1950. There are also a number of photos of HCF's Red Cross service jobs in Europe during World War I and of her work as an ambulance driver in Cambridge, England during World War II. The collection also includes formal portraits of HCF as a child and also as an adult; formal portraits of various members of the Foster family, including Charles Henry Wheelwright Foster and Mabel Chase Hill Foster; informal snapshots of HCF and various friends and family; photographs of HCF's various homes in Brookline, Charles River, and Marblehead, Mass. and Norwich, Vt.; and photos of sailing and sailboats. This collection includes cabinet cards, tintypes, color slides, Kodachrome reels (dye coupler phototransparencies), microfilm, film photonegatives, motion picture film reels, and other paper-based photographs, both black and white and in color. Most of the film photonegatives correspond to photographs within the collection. Most of the photographs were taken by Hilda Chase Foster.
