Miller was appointed as commissioner for the United States Courts on June 8, 1852, for a life term, by the United States Circuit judge. On July 12, 1869, he was given an appointment as Metropolitan Police Commissioner. He served as president of the Detroit Young Men's Society for the year 1861.
