Contains the following type of materials: photographs. Covers the following wars and time period: Pre-Civil War, Indian Wars, Philippine Insurrection. Contains photographs of the following military unit: 5th Regiment, U.S. Infantry. General description of the collection: The William H.C. Bowen photograph collection consists of photos that cover much of Colonel Bowen's career. There is emphasis on the periods he spent in the Philippines, between 1900 and 1911, and with the 5th United States (U.S.) Infantry. There are quite a number of family photos as well one of his parents, circa 1850, when his father was a lieutenant in the 1st U.S. Artillery Regiment. There are also several photos of General Nelson Miles and three photos of American Indians, circa 1895.

Miles was born in Westminster, Massachusetts, on his family's farm. He worked in Boston, read military history, and mastered military principles and techniques, including battle drills. Miles was working as a crockery store clerk in Boston when the American Civil War began. He entered the Union Army as a volunteer on September 9, 1861, and fought in many crucial battles.
