Warren L. Matthews papers [microform], 1936-1974.

This collection has four groups of documents. Group One is "Jesse Chisholm" written by Matthews. There is no date. Group Two are the manuscripts relating to Matthew's map of the Chisholm Trail. These include letters, statements of verification, and a blue print of a proposed marker. These items are dated 1936. Group Three is a biography of Warren Lebius Matthews presented by Mrs. Warren L. Matthews. This is dated March 16, 1974. Group Four are printed items such as a dedication and newspaper clippings about Jesse Chisholm. These items are dated 1941 through 1968.

Warren Lebius Matthews was born December 17, 1877 near Marcellus, Mich. He came to Clearwater (Sedgwick County) Kan., with his family and grew up on a farm. He graduated from Clearwater High School and then enlisted in the Spanish-American War in 1898. He married in 1899 and had a son who died. Matthews was a member of the Christian Church, Masonic and I.O.O.F. Lodges. Indian trader, guide, and interpreter Jesse Chisholm (1805?-1868) was born in the Hiawassee region of Tennessee. His father, Ignatius Chisholm, was a merchant and slave trader of Scottish ancestry, who married a Cherokee woman with whom he produced three sons, of which Jesse was the eldest.
