William Gallio Masters papers [i.e. Joseph Gallio Masters papers] [microform], 1900-1939.

Correspondence, interviews, clippings, articles, research notes, and bibliographies relating to the West (U.S.), trails, battles, Indians, and the Oregon Trail centennial. This collection represents the many years work Masters did to research and verify Western American history by traveling to the actual sites of historical events and interviewing participants. Much of the correspondence in the collection is between Masters and local postmasters and National Park Service, historical society, local, & other officials to try and learn the names of pioneers or "old timers" from whom he could request an interview. Masters was a researcher who was interested in verifying facts about the Old West while many of the participants were still living. The research was used in his 2 books, Stories of the far west and Shadows fall across the little horn. Topics include William ("Buffalo Bill") Cody; Chief Joseph of the Nez Percé, Yellow Hand, & other Native Americans; Jim Bridger; the Pony Express; and the Bozeman, Oregon, & Santa Fe trails.

3 microfilm reels ; 35 mm.
