Series 54-55, and 63-65 of record group 59-4 consist of a maps and a record of land sales, originally collected by either the Michigan Geological Survey or the Michigan Lands Division. The first map is of university lands, subdivisions of SW 1/2 of SW 1/4, sec. 7, T.2 S., R.7 W., in Calhoun County, Charles Merritt, Dep. County Surveyor, Mar. 30, 1844 (16" x 21 1/4" in size, scale 1/4 in. : 1 chn.). The second map is of university lands, Twp.2 S., R.6 W., in Calhoun County, drawn for the State Land Office by R. Andrewes, no date (13 1/2" x 17 1/4" in size, no scale given). The third map is of university land, section of plat in sec.2 S. along the Kalamazoo River, no date (12" x 16 1/2" in size, no scale given). The final map is of university land, T.2 S., R.7 W., no date (21 1/4" x 17" in size, no scale). The record group also includes a record of land sales in sec. 7, T.2 S., R.7 W., including number of block, to whom sold, date, number of certificate, to whom re-sold, date, certificate number, and remarks (no date given).

The Michigan Geological Survey was created by Public Act 20 of 1837. Its purpose was to conduct a geological and mineralogical survey of the state. The state legislature appointed Douglass Houghton the first state geologist (1837). In 1921, the state legislature established the Department of Conservation, and the Michigan Geological Survey became part of that department (Public Act 17 of 1921).
