Articles concerning "The burial of Latané", 1904- 1944, n.d.

The collection contains "The burial of Latané" by Joseph G. Walker. In his essay Walker relates the incidents of the 1862 burial [of the University of Virginia alumnus] and identifies the people portrayed in W. Dabney Washington's painting of the incident and the models who posed for the painting. The collection also contains an electrostatic copy and transcript of Gilberta S. Whittle's 1904 Baltimore Sun article "The burial of Latané" which relates the same story with more information on the composing of the poem, the painting of the picture and its subsequent engravings. With these is a 1944 copy by "Beth" of a 1932 letter to L.J. Taylor from Kate Brockenbrough Newton Christian, the last survivor of those depicted in the painting.
