Oral history interview with Samuel Benaroya, Jan. 17, 1988.

Benaroya describes his early life in Edirne, Turkey, discussing his schooling, cantor training, and the boys choir he formed at age 18. With the rise of Nazism, he emigrated to Geneva and worked as a cantor for the Sephardic community for 18 years. Unhappy with his congregants, he took a position at Sephardic Bikur Holim in Seattle, Washington, which he gained with the help of friends, who included Dr. David de Sola Pool of New York. Benaroya speaks about the interaction among Seattle orthodox synagogues and rabbis, the difficulties of Rabbi Kahan at Ezra Bessaroth, the Ladino language, intermarriage, Zionism, charity, and the many honors he has received.
