Clemens asks President-elect Garfield to keep Frederick Douglass in his position as marshal of the District of Columbia. Clemens refers to Douglass's "high + blemishless character" and "his brave long crusade for the liberties + elevation of his race."

James Garfield, twentieth President of the United States, was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, in 1831.
