Henry H. Haight letter : San Francisco, Calif., to Dugald C. Haight, St. Louis, Mo., 1851 August 30.

Letter from a future governor of California, Henry H. Haight, to his brother in St. Louis, Mo., encouraging him to come to California and assuring him of being able to make a good living. He also encourages his brother to take a clipper ship because the voyage would be good for him and allow him to bring all the clothes and books he needs. He comments: "there is a good deal of business done here in the U.S. District Court and works on maratime [sic] law are in great demand."

Henry Huntley Haight, California governor, was born in New York and graduated from Yale University in 1844. Haight moved to San Francisco, CA, and practiced law there until he was elected governor of California in 1867.
