Morley Preparative Meeting was formed around 1905 and met in a hall in Ackroyd Street. It was constituent of Brighouse Monthly Meeting until 1924, when it joined the newly formed Leeds Monthly Meeting. It was discontinued in 1969. There was also a burial ground in Morley, dating back to the early 18th century, on land originally purchased by William Jackson of Armley and Robert Arthington of Farnley as early as 1689. The Society of Friends (or 'Quakers') was formed by George Fox (1624-1691), a shoemaker from Nottingham. In the 1640s Fox travelled throughout England delivering sermons in which he argued that individuals could have direct access to God without the need for churches, priests or other aspects of the established Church.
